Here are some tips to help you get the most of the time you and your child spend watching each episode of CAILLOU.
During the CAILLOU episode:
- Watching TV doesn’t necessarily have to be a silent activity, especially for young children who have a short attention span. Talk to your child and ask what he/she thinks.
- Encourage your child to react to what is happening on TV, to applaud when Caillou succeeds and to sing along with him.
- Ask your child to guess what the end of the story will be to develop his/her imagination.
After CAILLOU is over:
- Caillou is popular with children in his age group because he is very much like them. Make the connections between the show and your child’s experiences, asking questions like: Did that happen to you? Have you seen that before? How did you feel? Did you do the same thing as Caillou?
- Read a book with your child that addresses the same topic as the show. Compare how the different characters reacted and encourage your child to express opinions, preferences, and tell you what he/she would have done.
- Suggest that your child draw his/her favorite scene from the show.
- Ask your child to tell you the story again, to encourage him/her to chat and expand his/her vocabulary. In the same vein, ask your child to make up another ending to the story to help develop his/her imagination.
