A monitoring and level management program

Caillou is aimed at preschoolers whose interests and skill sets vary widely. The CAILLOU Web site is designed to suit the expectations and capabilities of all children, whatever their ages or levels of advancement. Each game focuses on specific aptitudes, providing three progressive levels of complexity, levels which children can reach through the level manager’s individualized monitoring of their abilities.

When a child is browsing through the CAILLOU site and accesses the first game, he/she is presented with the easiest level. A program called a level manager monitors and analyses each play action made during the game. Using the child’s reaction time, successes and errors (number, type, repetition) in each successive game, the program custom defines and updates the child’s specific level.

Once the skills mastered by the child meet the requirements to graduate to a higher level, Caillou announces that a level change will take place and new challenges will be presented. This progression is applied to the different types of games (skill, logic, knowledge) and can vary throughout the site. The child thereby progresses at an appropriate pace, attracted by the novelty of the game but never discouraged by levels that are beyond his/her abilities.

Note: Each level involves a number of interchangeable elements (e.g., objects, decors and clues) ensuring that the child always experiences something new. Young children who remain at basic levels for some time can therefore continue to enjoy and get the most from each game that Caillou offers.
